the entire laptop begins to slow down significantly while running the game
I'm using an ASUS TUF GAMING 2020 FA506IU, and I'm experiencing problems where the laptop runs smoothly until I start a game. In the game menu, it works fine, but once I launch the actual game—like Genshin Impact and Dota 2—the laptop starts lagging after a few minutes or sometimes instantly. Even after exiting the game, checking Task Manager shows CPU and memory usage below 50%. Restarting the laptop takes about 5 minutes now, compared to just 5 seconds before. This issue seems new, so it might be a hardware failure or overheating problem. Anyone has suggestions on how to fix it or figure out the cause?
I'm not an expert with AMD or laptops, but it seems your machine is overheating and possibly throttling. If you're unsure about my advice, look into the information further.
For a new laptop, try using compressed air to clear out dust—this should help improve cooling.
If that doesn't work, reapplying thermal paste to the CPU might be necessary.
You might also want a good cooling pad or fans under the laptop to boost airflow, and ensure it's placed on a solid surface while gaming.
I don't have personal experiences, but I can tell you that my performance is consistent across various tasks.
It might be thermal throttling from overheating. Check HWInfo (free) while gaming to see the temperatures it logs.
While the laptop is idle, the temperatures are as follows:
Ryzen 7 4800H: 68.9 °C
Integrated Radeon: 62 °C
GTX1660 ti: 50.2
When I start the game, it quickly reaches below a few seconds to hit:
Ryzen 7 4800H: 99.4°C
Integrated Radeon: 93°C
GTX 1660 ti: 85.8°C
Running games at around 60fps without problems for more than 45 minutes before the whole system starts lagging again. After I press alt f4 within the game, the temperatures drop immediately to:
Ryzen 7 4800H: 52°C
Integrated Radeon: 48°C
GTX 1660 ti: 52°C
I also observed the temperatures for my 1660ti fluctuating between 52 and 0°C, and I believe it’s important to mention that I’ve set the preferred GPU for all my games on the 1660ti using the NVIDIA control panel.
