It seems you’re referencing some familiar elements in the game, but they don’t match the usual standards for a 2023 remake. I understand you’re not surprised by this, and I appreciate the feedback. The visuals, characters, and surroundings feel different from what we’d expect for a major update. While the core improvements in gameplay and presentation are noted, I’m not impressed enough to be blown away by the current look. If you’d like, I can suggest ways to add more depth and story beyond the typical tropes.
I took it quite seriously. It seems we're often met with exaggerated reactions about the PS2 graphics these days. They're not the best engine or visuals, but I believe folks overstate how poor certain titles look. Which game would you consider setting a new benchmark for a 2023 update? Visually stunning is tough now, especially since we're used to higher quality. The RE2 and 3 remakes really caught my eye because they were standout at their time. Village in particular impressed me back then, but now it feels less striking with the current graphics. Village 4 also looked similar on the demo side, though the updated visuals, lighting, and nostalgic feel made it appealing. I still have some critiques—movement could be smoother, and reloads were painfully slow. Expanding the story is a good idea, but I worry they might overdo it. RE's narrative isn't exceptional, and even the games can struggle with consistency compared to movies. Capcom seems to be heading in the right direction by updating what exists, mostly drawing on nostalgia from fans of the originals.
Idk...there's a small game that came out a few years I played through more than a couple of times that just got a makeover. Simple combat, dark horror atmosphere with zombiesque enemies and linear storyline, very reminiscent of Resident Evil 4 which I believe was actually a very large inspiration for it's development. Maybe you've heard of it? Does "Dead Space" ring any bells for you? Asinine delivery aside, many of the assets just look gross. The game doesn't look BAD and I never claimed it did, it just doesn't have the definition of what we've been spoiled by in even games released within the past few years. Tessellation, or the lack there of, is exceptionally poor. That blanket on the bed in a screenshot above...the wood planks...get up close to that stone entryway...where is the depth or detail?! There are going to be areas of the game we will revisit and even be locked into for extended periods where during whatever task we're currently doing we will notice these things. It's like a flat PNG thrown over the object mesh, it looks unfinished and considering it's close to release that could also be a likely contributing factor. Then again, it's SO CLOSE TO RELEASE that if that IS the case they really must be banking on those nostalgia glasses. Mine, however, are not so rose colored. Maybe I can chock it down to "demo doing demo things" but I had intended to preorder and stay as away as I can with my unhealthy Youtube habits to avoid spoiling the game for me (as in "what's different", not "what is Resident Evil 4"). I may still...or I'll wait for a few reviews and benchmarks. I'm not gonna miss out, I know how the story ends we all do. I'm gonna hold on to my hopes...but after this, a little more loosely. I don't WANT to be one of "those guys" but I could actually turn down this game because the graphics didn't justify it. (Says the guy who has never and refuses to play Skyrim, Cyberpunk, Red Dead or Last of Us...just not my taste in games)
It seems like you're considering today's release in a different light. The Dead Space remake impressed me despite some adjustments; it showcases what a successful remake can achieve. While it may not meet every expectation, it still stands as a solid example of the process. If the visuals don't quite hit your mark, that's okay—personal taste varies. It doesn't mean it's below average for 2023 if it meets basic standards. People's opinions will naturally differ.
I found the demo quite impressive. It wasn't flawless, but it was far from unpleasant. What stood out especially was the hair quality, even at the lowest settings—it generally looked much better than usual, with less shimmering and blurring compared to other versions.
My expectations have definitely shifted since setting up this system. For years, I was used to getting around 60+ frames per second at 1080p/Medium-High on much weaker hardware. Stability and performance weren’t my top priorities; I focused more on getting the game running smoothly. Now I can crank up settings and resolution for almost everything without worrying about FPS numbers. This has let me enjoy higher fidelity in games like Spiderman Remastered, God of War, Dying Light, Portal RTX, Doom Eternal, the REmakes, and Control. It feels like a big upgrade, especially since this build is only a couple of months old. Maybe that’s why I’m now aiming for better standards than before.
It might benefit from a bit more refinement until the final release. I understand that elements like the hair appeared appealing—we’ll likely spend hours examining the back of the man’s head and finding the jacket attractive. Then you move through a dense forest, encountering paper branches that blur between reality and surroundings, with textures and shadows lacking depth, plus shaky low-FPS flames reminiscent of the village bonfire. I’m being selective, though; perhaps my enthusiasm for these details is getting ahead of me.
I understand, it isn't flawless. Still, I believe it looks quite appealing.
