The Dell Optiplex 980 fails to detect Intel I7-870 processor.
Your Dell Opiplex 980 isn’t starting properly after the CPU upgrade. The orange/amber blinking light displays only the number 3, even when you try to boot with the Intel I7-870 you purchased. Despite updating the BIOS to version A18, the system still won’t power on. When you replace the I7-870 with an i5-650, it works perfectly. This suggests a compatibility issue with the newer CPU model.
It seems the system should work with an i7 870 from Dell. Verify all components are securely fastened, confirm the CPU is connected and powered (CPU plug in, BIOS status), reset CMOS by unplugging the PC and switching off the power supply for a few seconds, then test functionality. If issues persist, consider testing the CPU directly or returning the item. Note that some Chinese eBay CPUs appear to be significantly weaker compared to others I’ve used.
The original chip size of 73W and the new 95W might be the issue, but I doubt it. Dell likely uses different motherboards with varying power features and cooling options for CPU models like 45W and 65W. However, this doesn't seem relevant to the 980 model. You might have a mounting problem or another concern. What does code 3 refer to in the hardware service manual?
Everything is connected, I’ve reinitialized the BIOS and everything works now. The i5 650 is back in use and the system is running smoothly. It seems the issue lies with the i7 component.
