You're facing a tricky situation with your Dell Optiplex 390. The system seems to be stuck in a bootloop after replacing the CPU, despite having a compatible socket and recent BIOS updates. Since the i5-2400 worked fine before, it suggests the issue might lie with the new i7-3770 or its compatibility with the motherboard. Updating the BIOS helped previously, so the problem could be related to firmware quirks or driver conflicts. Trying a different motherboard socket is a good first step—check if the i5 fits in the same slot. If not, consider using a compatible i5 or another motherboard. Consulting Dell's support page and forums for similar cases might provide further guidance.

I'm not sure if this will be very useful. I've reinstalled the i5-2400, but the system is showing updates and I'm getting some warnings. I think the i7 might not work with it, so maybe I'll need to replace the motherboard?

It might not be compatible. The first link I checked suggested it could work with a Dell Optiplex 390, but the motherboard likely lacks the necessary features. Dell’s design probably includes planned obsolescence, meaning they didn’t actually support 3rd generation chips on this board.

Sure, I understand. I might need to switch to a mobile version. The games my brother enjoys are mostly Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, RL, Fortnite 5, and FIFA, which isn’t very challenging. I just wanted to leave some room for what’s next. Thanks for all the suggestions!
