I shared some weeks ago about struggling to get my system to start after months of inactivity and a few moves. I narrowed the problem to either the motherboard or the CPU, and recently examined the CPU to check for any issues like bent pins. When I took off the heatsink, the CPU was still attached, stuck to the bottom with thermal paste. The socket’s locking feature was disabled, suggesting the CPU shouldn’t have moved. I didn’t spot any bent pins or other abnormalities on the socket. After reinstalling the CPU, it remained fixed and the system still wouldn’t boot. Please see my profile for more details. I’ve contacted ASUS and Amazon, who are processing a full refund (Amazon can’t issue an RMA but agreed to reimburse the full amount). I’m wondering what might have caused this. Right now, I’m not sure if the motherboard is faulty. I’ll install the CPU once it arrives to test.
It's typical for dried paste to adhere to the CPU, especially if there were bent pins. Just gently twist the heatsink back and forth before removal can help prevent recurrence. Since you've already encountered a problem, pinpointing whether it's the CPU or the motherboard is more challenging now. I'd guess the CPU is likely fine. On an AM4 CPU, having it attached to the cooler—particularly a standard 2-pint cooler—is typical. This explains why AMD moved to the LGA socket for AM5. If the pins remain straight, the CPU likely survived the removal process. Changing the thermal paste helps avoid it hardening due to heat over time.
Removing the CPU from a cooler that’s stuck is very typical for PGA chips such as Ryzen 1-5000. It’s best to turn the cooler instead of lifting it straight up.
I'm assuming this is an AM4 cpu. This is a known issue with the way the socket holds the cpu. The thermal paste creates enough of a suction that you shouldn't just lift the cooler off the cpu. Letting the cpu warm up, shutting the computer down and twisting the cooler would have been an easier way to get it off. However, it's a bit late for that now. Dental floss can help. Try to get the dental floss between the cooler and the IHS of the cpu then work it through the thermal paste. You also might be able to twist the cpu to break the suction just be weary of grabbing it by the pins and bending them. How old is this system? If it were me, I'd start with replacing the CMOS battery since the system has been unplugged for a while. CR2032. It's the little watch battery that's on the motherboard.
Frequently the twisting doesn't work. The most recent attempt involved a 3700X and a Wraith Prism. No method removed the CPU—trying heat, alcohol, acids, or cleaners all failed. It felt like soldered, but only force with a knife managed to separate them, leaving just two bent pins that were simple to straighten back.
I handled it myself the other day on a 2600x. I managed to mess up around eight pins, but luckily I had a Stanley knife blade ready. It helped me remove the scorch mark from the heatsink and straighten all the pins. The pins didn’t get damaged when the CPU was finally released by the heatsink—some even ended up all over the room!
If you can't remove it easily, try using dental floss to gently separate it or use a hairdryer to soften the paste. Avoid using excessive force with a knife, as it could cause damage. The situation seems resolved positively!
