The connection between Hyper-Threading and multi-threaded rendering.
I enjoy playing World of Tanks on my PC, and its creators have just revealed plans to incorporate multi-threaded rendering into the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt7omxRRuoI). I’m planning to assemble a new gaming computer for the first time and am struggling to select the appropriate processor for an ASRock Z390M Pro4 motherboard – specifically, between the Intel Core i7-8700 or the Intel Core i5-9600K. I'd like to pose a query regarding this decision. My intention is to complete the build over several months, so there’s no immediate urgency. Please carefully consider the following question and provide a detailed response, thank you.
(1) Is a processor featuring Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology necessary to achieve improved performance, enhance my experience, or fully utilize multi-threaded rendering in games?
Working on multiple tasks simultaneously enhances productivity and is particularly beneficial when performing simultaneous activities like streaming and gaming. Even without streaming, utilizing multiple threads provides a significant performance boost, extending the lifespan of your CPU by preventing it from becoming strained.
The i7-8700 is a superior processor compared to the i5-9600k, both featuring six cores; however, the 8700 incorporates multithreading capabilities. The 9600k might exhibit a marginal advantage in applications such as emulators and older, single/dual-threaded games like Total War Rome II. Nevertheless, the distinction will be minimal, and the i7 will still deliver excellent performance (approximately estimating, if the i5 achieves 100 frames per second in that game, the i7 will likely reach around 90 FPS, which is still a commendable result).
You could potentially increase the i5's advantage in these specific situations through overclocking; however, it’s generally unnecessary to choose the i5 unless you consistently utilize it primarily with games and software—a scenario that is unlikely for you.
Therefore, selecting the i7 is undoubtedly the best choice.
