My computer keeps shutting down unexpectedly even when using BIOS. Recently, it crashed repeatedly without restarting properly. To get back online I had to power off and turn it on again, then navigate through the manual boot settings and boot from the SSD (which contains Windows and an HDD for storage). Occasionally it would launch into Windows but would crash shortly after. I also attempted emergency mode, though it didn’t work well—I think it restarted during that process. BIOS doesn’t recognize my SSD in the boot options despite showing it in manual mode. Just before this happened, I updated my GPU drivers successfully, which might have contributed to the issue. Windows is fully updated and I’m using a brand new power supply with ample capacity.

If it restarts or stops in the BIOS, the problem isn't with the operating system. It might be due to faulty hardware or an outdated BIOS version. Unplug anything unnecessary and let the PC run. Remove as many components as you can. For instance, use just the motherboard, CPU, cooler, power supply, and GPU if needed. Then test again. Also, share your system specifications.

The HDD might be damaged, but removing it doesn’t necessarily brick it. It could still be repairable depending on the issue.

Yes, the system functions properly when the HDD is removed.

It’s an older HGST 1TB hard drive, likely from about six years ago. I took it out of my old laptop a while back to add extra space, making it a compact 2.5-inch HDD.

It seems odd that I reinserted my old HDD and everything worked fine now. I’m not sure what caused the problem. Perhaps a loose PSU cable was the issue, and securing all connections resolved it. I’ve attached a screenshot from the CrystaldiskInfo page for my HDD (the other two are M.2 SSDs).
