The computer stops unexpectedly while handling simple activities.
i recently assembled a brand new machine running a fresh Windows 10 Pro setup. sometimes it freezes during light activities such as web browsing or when idle. When this occurs, there’s an initial lag before commands respond. I lose interaction beyond basic program control; only mouse movement remains possible. Eventually the display goes dark but the system stays on. I had to keep the power button pressed until a forced shutdown occurred within 20 to 30 seconds. At first i assumed a memory issue, so i kept Task Manager active in the background. Memory usage stayed around 6GB out of 32GB. The crash persisted even after checking. Interestingly, it only happens with light tasks—not games—and occasionally about once or twice daily. It also occurred yesterday when the machine failed to start. The ASUS motherboard displayed error code 42, and support suggested re-seating the RAM, which resolved the issue and let me use the computer again. After that, it worked fine for a week. Now it’s rebooting again. Could be a coincidence. All components except the GPU are brand new, so i’m unsure where to start. Is there a way to review background activity after a reboot? Any logs or clues about what caused the crash?
I completed all three tasks yesterday, but the machine stopped working again today. That means it wasn’t the issue.
Check if AMD Expo is enabled, see if XMP is active when Expo is off, and use Passmark Memtest86 to verify your RAM.
I disabled Expo on Friday. It's been running steadily so far, though just one day. I'm downloading Passmark memtest86 and plan to run it tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. Appreciate your support thus far.
The update time shows stability on weekends but crashes on Monday and Tuesday. Expo doesn’t seem to be the issue. I ran memtest86 last night, which took five hours and showed no errors. What should I examine next? Thanks for your help!
I run the identical SSD but at 500GB on my Linux server that operates around the clock without any problems. It's still a possibility.
