My theseus' ship of a pc has started doing strange things. when running a super power-hungry game (baldur's gate 3, last of us), it will heat up and heat up and eventually shut off or something. there's a nice click, all the fans turn off, usb peripherals and screens turn off. rgb ram stays lit though. and it doesnt respond to the power button, i need to toggle the psu switch to get it back up. it smells faintly of hot chip/plastic. i've been unable to catch it in the act but last i looked i saw temps getting into the 90s on gpu and cpu. my questions: * how can i better 1) reproduce this issue, and 2) log data such that it's not lost when it shuts down, so i can review it * what is yalls gut feeling on the issue. cpu overheat? gpu overheat? power limit something? specs: cpu: 5900x gpu: 3090 FE (the super noisy fan disabled in afterburner, but the issue persists with it enabled. FE cards ) cpu cooler: probably dusty case airflow: poor hdds: yes psu: 750W thanks all!

Initially, the 40x0 series FE cards aren't excessively noisy, so don't overlook them just because the 30x0 series had issues. NVIDIA likely learned from past mistakes, which is why the 40x0 models are more robust. The issue seems tied to the 30x0 series high current consumption causing your PSU to fail. These cards are known to spike power usage up to twice their rated capacity for short periods—something a decent PSU can manage, but not a cheap one.

Thanks for the reply! Does this seem like an overpowered setup? I believed the cards activated their power bursts when starting a load, not in the middle. For a system like this, would you suggest a 1kW PSU?

It focuses on GPU utilization and load intensity. Higher-end games tend to show more spikes when transitioning between low activity zones and high-effect areas. The PSU quality plays a role, but an 850W rating seems reasonable. Check the PSU tier list. For my taste, I’d choose Tier A - High End - Single Rail, especially the Corsair RMx line.

It fits perfectly with my 5950X + 4090 setup since I discovered a comparable model at a similar cost to the RM850x. A feature I appreciate about the RMx is the easy access to genuine ATX 3.0 cables when required.
