The computer occasionally fails to power on completely
Hi,
I assembled a PC two months ago using these components:
Motherboard: MSI B550M Mortar Wifi
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
Graphics Card: Sapphire Pulse RX Radeon 6700XT
PSU: BitFenix BFG Gold 750W
Case: MSI Mag Forge 100M
RAM: Kingston FURY Beast 16 GB 3200 MHz x2
SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB NVMe M.2
Over time, I observed the CPU LED staying on. After checking online, I found similar reports and thought it might be a known issue, so I didn’t worry much.
Occasionally, when I pressed the power button, fans would activate but there would be no display or USB devices responding. Repeating the action usually resolved the problem. Now, pressing the power button sometimes results in nothing happening at all, while other times it works properly.
I’ve decided to investigate further because it’s not starting reliably. I started with the CPU since the LED was still on. After reinstalling it, the system booted normally but the LED remained active. When I powered it off and tried again, it failed completely—no fan movement and no lights.
I’m unsure what to do next. Any advice? Should I check the PSU first or is there a more likely motherboard problem?
Thanks!
Power down, disconnect, and open the case.
Remove dust and debris (hopefully none present).
Check that all connectors, cards, RAM, jumpers, and case connections are securely positioned.
I suspect a connection that felt tight during initial assembly might have loosened over time—especially after a few months. This has caused occasional issues until the system stabilizes.
Reconnect and disconnect each component several times, reinserting cards and RAM carefully. Keep the CPU untouched.
Once everything is properly seated again, the setup should feel more stable and reliable.
So it functioned properly when I made the final update, but the following morning it failed to turn on. I removed and reconnected the JFP1 cables, and it worked correctly. I decided to retest, so I powered it down again, but pressing the power button didn't respond. Following advice, I unplugged everything and reconnected them. It started up but couldn't boot or power any USB devices. After turning it off and reattempting, it still didn't work. The issue seems consistent each time, making it hard to identify a solution. I have another build with comparable parts, so I might consider swapping components one by one to see if it helps, though it would be a time-consuming process since I'd need to take apart two builds. Do you have any practical tips for troubleshooting this step by step?
