I purchased a new graphics card today. I upgraded from a GTX 1060 to a Radeon 7800XT. I removed the Nvidia drivers using DDU but didn’t switch to Windows Safe Mode. While taking the GPU out, I accidentally broke the clip in the PCIe slot. At that time the PC was still operational and I managed to uninstall the drivers successfully. After restarting, the old GPU worked fine. I turned off the PC and shut down the PSU. I took out the 1060 and installed the 7800XT, which started up with power on but no display. For troubleshooting, I swapped it back to the 1060. Now neither GPU shows anything on the screen. I reset the CMOS and reinserted the RAM. I changed the RAM sticks and placed the 1060 in the second PCIe slot, but nothing has been resolved. Unfortunately, the 1060 still boots but doesn’t display anything. The 7800XT has not started Windows at all. I bought a new motherboard but haven’t opened it, wondering if that’s the problem. I’m considering returning it if needed. One thing to note is my PSU is a Corsair semi-modular 650W unit. Could that be the root cause or something else? PC setup includes Ryzen 5600X, MSI B550 A-Pro, G.Skill Trident Z 3200 (2x16), PNY CS900, 1TB Seagate HDD, and Corsair CX650M.
Ensure both ends of the display cable are securely connected and the monitor is powered on, as these small details often get ignored.
When removing the Nvidia drivers using DDU, Safe Mode isn't necessary and likely wasn't the main issue. The damaged PCIe slot clip isn't too much of a concern as long as the GPU is correctly placed. The Corsair semi-modular 650W PSU should work with your system, including after upgrading to the Radeon 7800XT. If the PSU isn't reliable or isn't delivering consistent power, it might affect the GPUs. You could switch to another PSU or borrow one from someone else. If a different PSU still causes problems, the power supply could be the problem. Ensure the GPUs are firmly connected in their PCIe slots and all cables are secure. Try linking the display to the motherboard's built-in graphics to check for a signal—this may reveal if the issue lies with the GPUs or elsewhere. If you have another machine, test those GPUs to see if they function normally. This can help identify whether the problem is with the GPUs themselves or with your current setup. Lastly, do you notice any spinning noise when connecting the GPUs?
Both GPUs turn on and spin up once connected to power. I don’t have any built-in graphics card. Everything appears to function properly. The DRAM light is flickering slowly when the 7800xt is connected. Is this a RAM issue? I’ve reconnected the PSU cables several times.
My previous graphics card is functioning properly now. I’m uncertain about the changes I made to Ethernet and HDMI connections before turning it on. It’s displaying correctly now. Regarding the 7800xt, the DRAM indicator flashes roughly every ten seconds when it’s plugged in, but it doesn’t power up despite lights and fans being active. Could the power issue be related to it? It’s a bronze-certified Corsair 650-watt model.
