Hello, my system becomes unresponsive whenever I play a game or try to push my GPU to its limits. The freezing lasts from a couple of seconds during stress tests up to an hour in less demanding titles like Minecraft. My RTX 5080 was recently returned from RMA because the thermal pad detached and landed on my case. I contacted tech support who confirmed the card passed stress testing and was sent back. They also suggested it might be related to the riser cable or power supply. However, once I set up my 3070ti inside the PC everything functions normally. It doesn’t display a black screen or any other issues—it just freezes the monitors until I perform a hard restart.

Note. Prior to the card being sent to RMA, it exhibited the same freezing problem, which helped me identify the issue.

Specs
CPU – Intel I9-12900k
Motherboard – Gigabyte B760I Aorus Pro
GPU – Gigabyte RTX 5080
RAM – Corsair Vengeance RBG Pro 32GB 2x16 DDR4
Storage – 250GB SSD and 2TB M.2
Power Supply – Corsair RMX RM1000x Cybenetics Gold
Case – Hyte Y70
Riser Cable – Linkup PCIE 5.0

Steps taken
- XMP disabled
- Integrated graphics turned off
- Windows clean install
- Updated drivers for both old and new versions
- Installed new riser cable
- Removed and reinstalled DDU
- Performed admin reinstall

Thank you for your assistance. If you need additional photos or further tests, please let me know!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Is there a problem before the RMA process?
Moba- Gigabyte B760I Aorus Pro
Current BIOS version on your motherboard?
PSU- Corsair RMX RM1000x Cybenetics Gold
You mentioned using an RTX 3070 Ti. Did the PSU you listed power the 3000 series RTX GPU before the RTX 5080? If yes, how recent is that PSU? Did you run DDU in Safe Mode to uninstall all GPU drivers (intel, AMD, nvidia), restart, and then manually install the newest driver via an elevated command, such as right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator?
Windows clean install
What operating system are you using, and where did you obtain the installer for it?
New Riser Cable installed
Try breadboarding your PC's internal components to test the discrete GPU without the riser card.

The BIOS indicates American Megatrends International, LLC. Version F8, dated 10/16/2023. The problem began when I realized I needed to return my GPU for RMA—it had never happened before. The power supply keeps running smoothly without any freezes in my computer. It was bought on April 14th, 2025, which is less than a year old. Did DDU still freeze after 24.7 seconds? I'm using Windows 11 Pro and installed it via USB according to the official installer instructions.

It was the riser cable that caused issues. The 4.0 version didn't function, and upgrading to 5.0 also failed. I tried breadboarding it, and it worked without any problems.

Current BIOS revision at this stage is F15. I plan to update the BIOS to this release, ensuring you have the most recent chipset drivers before proceeding, and then reset the CMOS. After that, check if the riser cables function properly.
