Trying to understand how a faulty mouse might harm a PC involves several unlikely factors coming together. The power draw is small, and a short in the mouse is extremely rare. For a mouse to cause damage, you'd need multiple rare events: 1) Mouse malfunction or failure, 2) Motherboard protection system breakdown, 3) PSU protection circuit failure. It seems software issues could be the main suspect here.
Great update! I found the problem with the laptop—some metal had come loose and caused a short circuit. I didn’t want to risk further damage, so I took it to a repair shop and explained what I saw; they confirmed it was the cause and said no additional work was needed.
I also added a fan since one was already in my package, and it worked perfectly. I didn’t even try anything else. To be safe, I backed up all important files to an external hard drive and kept the most critical data on a separate USB drive.
