The top choice for gaming is Arch Linux, mainly because of its TKG packages that work well with Wine, Proton, Kernel, and Mesa. It’s especially good for AMD graphics, though NVIDIA users might find some issues, thanks to Arch’s frequent updates. For AMD setups, Manjaro seems to offer better compatibility and performance with Proton and Lutris compared to other distros, likely due to its newer Mesa versions. If you’re just starting out, PopOS provides the strongest out-of-box support, but for a ready-made system—particularly with NVIDIA graphics—it’s probably what you need.

It really doesn't matter which distribution you choose, as long as you can actually enjoy the game. Linux works the same way regardless of differences in gaming performance. You likely prefer a user-friendly system for non-game tasks. If you're new to Linux, opt for Kubuntu and stick with it for a few months. By then, you'll understand what suits your needs best.

Package differences affect game performance across various systems, making your claim unreliable. Based on this reasoning, Ubuntu 8.04 would be comparable to 20.04, which we understand isn't accurate. Other distributions might also provide access to third-party software that could enhance or hinder experiences with applications like Wine and Proton.

Manjaro has performed well for gaming. Mint had some unusual issues recently—can’t disable mouse acceleration, just reduce it. Consider using multiple USB drives, installing various distributions on them, and choosing the one that fits your needs best.
