The trackpad on your Asus A16 Gaming laptop appears to be malfunctioning. It only responds from the left and right edges, with minimal or no feedback in the center. Pressing firmly on it sometimes restores some function, but then inputs are rejected and the mouse may move erratically. You tried cleaning it with a microfiber cloth and reinstalling the ASUS drivers, which didn’t resolve the problem. You’re also considering hardware repairs, though you’d prefer to avoid that since it would require removing the laptop’s front panel and you’re out of warranty. Any suggestions?

Consider a different trackpad option; sometimes these are affordable, but you'll likely need to disassemble the entire laptop. Alternatively, opt for a wireless mouse as a simpler choice.

It may be a loose ribbon cable as others have mentioned. However, here is another possibility that is fairly common. The battery is underneath the trackpad, pay close attention, as the battery may be swelling and is now applying pressure to the trackpad and is bending it. It may be worth disassembling the laptop enough to check. (Videos are everywhere). DO NOT PUNCTURE the battery. It will release lithium gas which is very unhealthy (but smells good) and means your battery needs to be replaced. I bring that up, because a new trackpad probably won't fix that... and a wireless mouse won't fix the swelling battery which WILL start damaging other components.

You've checked everything and still have issues. The battery looks normal, the trackpad area was cleaned, and the ribbon cable is secure. It might be a hardware problem with the trackpad itself. Since this is new, it could be a manufacturing defect or a component failure. Consider contacting the manufacturer for support or exploring repair options.

It seems the device might be malfunctioning. I suspect the touchpad could be faulty, possibly due to a capacitive issue. The clicking sound isn't certain. Check the area where the touchpad connects to the laptop and look for any cracks or broken parts in the plastic mounts. Seeing a diagram of how a capacitive touchpad functions can help identify problems. If damage is found, it may cause irregular clicks or movement.
