The APK was downloaded but failed to run and install.
Hello everyone,
Android version : 9
I’m uncertain if I clicked something unintentionally, but I saw an APK file (game) saved in the APK folder of my file manager. After some time, I noticed that installation from unknown sources through Chrome and the file manager was enabled. Still, I’m pretty sure even with this feature active, APK files can’t install automatically without my approval. Before removing the APK, I scanned my device using the latest versions of Dr.Web and Avast antivirus for Android. A week later, I performed more scans with Intercept X by Sophos, Malwarebytes, and ESET (all free versions, not upgraded).
Could I be sure the APK didn’t cause any damage to my phone, given that I never opened, tapped, or installed it?
Also, for general understanding: If a malicious APK is sent in a messaging app like Telegram and I don’t save, download, or forward it—can it still harm my device?
Thank you.
You're using an outdated phone, which makes exploits easier to find compared to updated models.
Several tasks are ongoing (downloads, app installations) without you recalling enabling them yourself.
You've tested many trusted scanning tools.
TL;DR: Assessing your situation can be difficult. Non-updated phones aren't usually safe, but if necessary, limit app usage and restrict general activity.
Next time, consider uploading unknown files to VirusTotal for broader scan results.
For concerns: You might still fall for programs that cover your screen with another interface, allowing remote control. Compromised devices have been used by governments and organized crime, affecting a wide range of users.
If I were overly cautious, I'd reset the phone; otherwise, I'll rely on scanners that confirm it's safe now.
Hi and thanks for your reply
What I remember is that I could have done it, but I chose not to click the option (maybe for a silly reason)
Even though it wasn’t installed or tapped, it still downloaded automatically (perhaps because of an ad link I clicked)
How can I be sure that no active RAT or malware is running on my Android phone?
Right now I’m writing that ESET, MalwareBytes, Intercept X, Dr.Web, and Avast are all active
I want to stay calm but still feel worried; I don’t want to reset everything
I just want to understand how that APK was downloaded and what the possible solutions are, like tapping on an ad link?
I mentioned I intentionally didn’t upload it to Virustotal to avoid clicking on a file from my device.

If you removed the files and your scans are clear, it seems fine. I recommend checking your routines and adjusting them to avoid this in the future.
In your opinion, avast android AV and Dr.web AV are regarded as trustworthy Android antivirus solutions that are dependable and worth using.
