All current GPUs may cause performance issues with this CPU, though results depend on the game. Once you have the GPU, consider upgrading the CPU, motherboard, and RAM later.

Choose the top modern graphics card that fits your budget, and don’t stress about it limiting your Athlon II. Of course it might, but that’s just part of the deal. Why worry? Upgrading other components usually lets a new GPU integrate smoothly. Buying a low-quality card just to match your Athlon could become a bottleneck for future upgrades or leave you with wasted funds on something only useful for your old system.

The graphics card isn't limiting the CPU, the CPU limits the graphics card. The card can't run at full speed because the CPU is too slow and its instruction count per cycle is insufficient. Some games might fail since the CPU doesn't support necessary instruction sets like SSSE3, AVX, FMA, etc. Based on the motherboard, certain advanced cards may not function if the BIOS lacks proper UEFI support. Ex RX series from AMD requires UEFI in the BIOS and won't work on older Dell models with outdated BIOS features. Your question needs improvement—try playing a game at 800x600 ultra low quality, and the card might only reach 200 fps. Switching to 1080p ultra quality could drop performance to 10-20 fps or less due to high VRAM usage and swapping between RAMs. It also depends on the game—platformers generally need fewer CPU calculations than action-heavy titles. Consider getting the best graphics card you can afford and compatible with your setup, and if possible, upgrade the CPU, motherboard, and RAM for better performance.
