Hey everyone, I’m reaching out for some advice. My system has been running smoothly for about six and a half years, but recently my motherboard failed. I swapped it out with a new one. The problem is that my overclocking isn’t holding up, and the BIOS keeps popping up errors like “Incorrect BIOS settings,” “Current CPU speed: 0.00Mhz,” and it forces me to load the fail-safe BIOS. Everything seems normal on default settings, but I can’t even set my memory’s XMP to 1600 MHz DDR3 or push the CPU overclock. It’s frustrating because my old motherboard handled a similar setup for years without any trouble. The only thing that bothers me is that my previous card worked just fine at 3.6GHz for six years, so why shouldn’t this new one perform better? I’m not worried about temperature since I’m using a CLC. Here’s what I have:
It's all centered around the silicone lottery participant. Besides the fact that the motherboard greatly affects your overclocking, the CPU is also crucial here. As Linus emphasized repeatedly, CPUs vary significantly. This means you might have missed the silicone lottery this round and can't exceed 3.6. The silicone lottery concept also extends to motherboards.
This might hold some truth, but generally the variation is far less noticeable than on CPUs. On a 970, achieving such a low output voltage would be rare unless you cover the VRMs with blankets. To OP: I’d suggest updating the BIOS first.
I noticed you managed to overclock with your old motherboard but not with the new one. For silicon lottery, you were able to run 3.8 stable continuously, though you opted for 3.6 due to diminishing returns and heat concerns. The Gigabyte site lists only a single BIOS, which comes with your board. Should I suggest reflashing it? Yes, you did successfully achieve 3.6 without raising core voltage. Your old motherboard lacked heatsinks, so you built your own DIY ones. There’s also a possibility of a BIOS bug, but since only one version is available, re-flashing the same BIOS seems unlikely to help.
That won't help then. Seems to be a very late AM3+ board anyway.
I still consider attempting it, just in case the initial version had issues. Waiting isn’t wise given the upcoming BIOS update. There’s just one BIOS available—F1.
I've modified the BIOS before. I'll attempt a reflash. If successful, that's fine. If not, can I contact Gigabyte and explain that their BIOS prevents overclocking? I assume warranty coverage doesn't apply?
