This laptop uses Win11 by default, and I was hoping there would be an option to always use a specific app for certain file types—such as a checkbox labeled "Always use this app." For example, SEO appears to have disrupted that setting, redirecting searches to restore the original Windows defaults. Do you know if anyone has experienced this issue or how to revert it?

No results found for any format. Files like jpg, png, gif, bmp aren't loading. Both .png and png return empty.

The feature isn’t available right now. On my previous Windows 10 system it was possible. Some users report having that option online. The issue seems to be missing a setting to lock in the changes permanently. Installing Irfanview allows adjusting default image settings, but after restarting those defaults were cleared. Why can’t I set a file type as the permanent app?

It seems the system didn’t recognize the png format due to a formatting issue. I noticed no way to choose a default app for files, which is unusual since copy and paste has been a core feature since Windows 1.0. You might want to try other settings that appear similar in the link provided.

It's easy to understand what might be wrong. You may have adjusted your system's Group Policy or used a tool that acted on purpose or not. The next step is figuring out how to resolve the problem. Begin by checking Administrative Templates, then Windows Components, and finally File Explorer.

Tested again, there's no space before or after. Also, the very article you link has this screenshot, showing the same amount of distance: Moving on, the article also describes this option: But I'm getting this: The button is just not there (file path wiped for privacy). Meanwhile I've discovered that for certain video files I can change the default. Just not file like gif, jpg and png and the like... No such thing happened. Windows tweakers stopped being useful after Win Vista, in my opinion. Had a quick check " Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer." not sure what I should be looking for. I'd also mention: this is an HP laptop. Maybe this is a preconfig from HP?

i understand it isn't a certainty, but I recommend going through the guide once more carefully. There are many possible approaches, some of which might no longer exist (these resources often become outdated). Still, several should remain, especially this one—remembering what I did when I tested version 11 (it was a pre-release) is hard for me. Edit: also verify the version you're using; your laptop might just need an update. Beginning with Windows 11 build 25206, the updated “Open with” window is now accessible to everyone. Apparently it was missing at several points before. Yeah, that’s what happened to me recently with shutup10... I was really foolish to install the latest release later, since it felt much more intrusive and worse than older versions. It completely turned off Cortana, even though I hadn’t touched any settings related to her. I restored everything by resetting all configurations (probably because a privacy setting ignored Cortana entirely). Now Cortana is back, but she’s different—her behavior changed. Previously, my “top apps” would freeze, which was actually helpful for convenience. I don’t know what setting could have caused that, but in theory, I’d just need to revert to an older version of shutup10 that remembered my preferences! Honestly, it’s possible someone else faced the same issue—why would so many file options disappear? As far as I know, Windows 11 still supports that feature. P.S.: That applies to their Windows edition (as mentioned in my note).

In the meantime, I discovered the settings within irfanview to handle this automatically. It's odd that it would work like that. Right now, Windows Update indicates there are no more updates available for me... I'll keep monitoring, but I've managed to find a solution so far... Still curious. Thanks to everyone who responded and contributed their help.
