The 4070 generally offers improved battery performance compared to the iGPU in laptops.
I received a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Gen 9 equipped with an AMD processor recently. I've been optimizing it for peak performance when connected and for maximum battery conservation when idle. Despite these efforts, I'm experiencing inconsistent battery performance. I've configured the Lenovo toolkit to switch the laptop into quiet mode, enable Windows power-saving settings, set 60Hz, 50% brightness, and activate power-saving features when on battery. Additionally, I've adjusted the screen to 240Hz, balanced mode, and set display brightness to 80 upon connecting the AC adapter. With these configurations, I achieve around -14 watts while plugged in, allowing roughly 4 hours and 30 minutes of GPU usage. However, when enabling the integrated graphics, power consumption rises to -19 watts and sometimes reaches -25 watts. There are also issues with the iGPU: it occasionally remains active in the background or shuts off improperly during startup, leaving the dedicated GPU running unnecessarily. With the 4070-only mode, I'm getting about 4 hours and 30 minutes, while using the integrated GPU drops to approximately 2.5 to 3 hours—this seems inconsistent. Could anyone clarify what might be causing these variations? I also noticed I installed Windows 11 myself and manually downloaded all drivers from Lenovo's site.
I resolved the issues. It was a precise problem with my laptop. In case anyone encounters this thread, I wanted to share. Programs left running were sending pings to the dedicated GPU, causing it to drain the battery. Turning off the afterburner and playing games like Epic extended its life, now providing me with about 9–10 hours of battery.
Found something interesting but it's helpful to know! Great improvement!
