You'll still require a CPU to install updates at launch. It might be worth purchasing an affordable Athlon model until the official release.

Yes, it's possible that certain motherboards can handle BIOS updates without a Zen 2 processor if they support BIOS flashback features.

Approximately four weeks back the Ryzen 5 3600 cost $150 at Micro Enter, which I bought for a new $750 PC build. Now it’s $180 at Micro Center. Prices have definitely gone up.

They're not listed on Amazon at the moment. Newegg has it for $199, which looks like the best deal among major retailers.
