The 250GB Samsung SSD running Windows 11 led to several issues when connected to two of my desktops.
Hi, I recently acquired a 250 GB Samsung SSD from an unused spare build. I intended to install it as a secondary drive on my laptop but ended up booting into Windows 11 instead of the intended Windows 10. Since the system didn’t recognize the drive, I attempted to enter BIOS to access it, but the process was unclear. I removed the SSD and connected it to my main desktop to replicate the laptop setup. However, when trying to boot from the desktop drive, it entered an Automatic Repair mode and displayed "Return to Windows 10" instead of the expected "Return to Windows 11." I then tried booting from the main drive on my desktop, which was no longer a recognized system drive. Eventually, I connected both the 250 GB SSD and the desktop’s System SSD to another spare desktop to format it, but this caused the system to power on without a display. I resolved the issue by unplugging the 250 GB SSD and removing the CMOS battery. When I connected the main desktop’s System SSD, it wasn’t detected by either BIOS or Windows 11 file manager on the spare PC, though it appeared in Disk Utility like Disk Manager without a letter. Interestingly, the laptop functioned normally after removing the 250 GB SSD.
TLDR: Attempted to format the 250 GB SSD with Windows 11 for a secondary drive, but it led to complications across both desktops and made the main desktop’s system drive unrecognizable.
Specs:
Laptop: Lenovo E570 (i7 7500U, 8GB DDR4, 250GB NVME, GTX 950M 2GB)
Desktop 1: i7 3960X, 16GB DDR3 RAM, GTX 1060 6GB, MACHINIST X79 MOTHERBOARD, 128GB SSD ( SYSTEM ), 1TB HDD, 1TB HDD, 500W XFX XT PSU
Desktop 2: AMD A10-6700, GTX 750 TI, 12GB DDR3 RAM, 128GB KINGSTON SSD, 128GB INTEL SSD, (MOTHERBOARD UNKNOWN – low-end ASUS board removed from an ASUS pre-built unit)
I believe you should create a bootable USB installer for Windows 11, then start from that to launch the USB installer, format the SSD you removed from the previous system, and then insert it into your laptops.
