temperatures on i7 4790k at 4.5 ghz unusual
Hi, I’m wondering if the temperatures look normal since I noticed something odd. I got it at 4.5ghz with 1.205V and ran Prime95 for 10 minutes at 75-78°C, but the core temperatures were quite different: Core0=76, Core1=63, Core2=61, Core3=5. However, when the Test 1, Lucas Lehmer Iterations of M172031 starts, it jumps to 95°C.
Specs: Z97x Killer, i7 4790k, 4.5ghz, 8gb RAM, 750 XFX XTR, Enermax ETS T40 Cooler.

I own Enermax (Dow Corning TC-5121), one of the top thermal pastes for my current temperature of 32°C. I reinstalled my cooler twice and it still works perfectly. I used Prime v28.5 build 2, and my case has great airflow—it's a custom setup, so no issues there. The unusual part is the significant difference in core temperature. I initially thought the paste wasn't spread enough, but it turned out otherwise.
Edit: I tried Prime 95 at 26.6°C, reaching a max of 85°C after testing. Before that, it was around 74°C. That’s a noticeable jump. For a quick boost, 85°C is acceptable, but it might be too high for sustained use. A lower temperature like 74°C would be better for daily operation. When temperatures reach 4.5, 4.6, or 4.7°C, the chip gets quite hot—consider cooling it down then.
either your cooler is not mounted properly or you have bad contact between the cooler and HIS or you have high ambient temperature (above 30C) or your case has poor airflow
Those temperatures are too high.
What version of prime95 is being used? Newer releases cause Intel chips to overheat excessively. For accurate readings, use realbench or Prime95 26.6 or earlier; otherwise, their temperatures seem reasonable.
I have Enermax (Dow Corning TC-5121) which is 1 of the best thermal pastes my ilde temp is 32c, i reinstalled my coooler twice still the same, i used Prime v28.5 build 2, my case got perfect airflow it's a custom made so no worries about it, the strange one is the big diference in core0 .... i thought that the thermal paste was not spread long enough but no,
Edit: i run Prime 95 26.6 the highest was 85c after test 3 before that 74c

I ran Prime 95 and the highest temperature reached was 85c after test 3, before it dropped to 74c. That's a quick improvement. For a short boost, 85c is acceptable, though 74c for regular use seems fine. Once the temperature hits 4.5, 4.6 or 4.7, it starts getting quite hot with that chip. You might want to consider cooling down too.
It stayed at 85c only during the test changes, where it briefly rose to 87c for a moment before returning to 85 after the third test. That's a bit concerning given the 20°C difference between cores...

Jossrik shared his experience about using Enermax (Dow Corning TC-5121) at a temperature of 32°C. He installed the cooler twice and still had perfect airflow, noting it was a custom-built setup. He mentioned the main issue wasn't the paste spreading enough but something else. He tried Prime v28.5 and saw temperatures go up to 85°C, which is a bit high. He wondered if the difference between cores was affecting performance and expressed concern about it being a sign of a failing core.
angelion shared their experience with a thermal paste installation, mentioning they used Enermax (Dow Corning TC-5121) at a temperature of 32°C. They installed Prime v28.5 build 2 and reported perfect airflow in their custom-built case. They noted a slight difference in core temperature but confirmed no major issues. They also discussed the possibility of adjusting individual cores for better performance.

I'm using Enermax (Dow Corning TC-5121) and it performs well at 32°C. I reinstalled my cooler twice and still got perfect airflow. The build version is Prime v28.5, and my case was custom-made, so everything should be fine. The main issue is the core temperature difference—somewhere around 20°C between cores. I thought the paste spread enough but it wasn't. After testing at 85°C, it stayed stable for a short time before dropping back to 85 after the third test. That’s a bit concerning given the temperature gap. You might be experiencing a failing core. Adjusting each core individually, like 44-45-45-45, could help. That should improve things. I’ll try it and let you know the results.
