My entire PC has been operating smoothly over the past few days after adding four new fans, which improved airflow in my setup. The idle CPU temperatures have stayed around 31°C consistently. Recently, when I opened HWinfo, the readings fluctuated wildly—temperatures spiked to about 40–55°C while idling, jumping up and down by as much as 9 degrees every second. It’s hard to believe such rapid changes are possible. I re-applied thermal paste to check for contamination, but it didn’t help. I also recently overclocked my i5-10600K CPU to 4.8GHz, which isn’t unusual. During benchmarking, I reached around 95°C, so I stopped the test immediately to avoid damage. Still, I’m concerned about possible harm from those high readings. Could I have misconfigured the temperature sensors or something similar? EDIT: After letting the PC sit idle for about 20 minutes, the fluctuations ceased and temperatures stabilized between 33–38°C. Is it normal for temps to swing like this when the system comes to life?

These startup temperatures seem plausible, likely due to the operating system required for program launches. Try turning off certain components and observe the effect.

You're experiencing the same problem with your AMD stock cooler, and you're wondering which cooler you're using. It's frustrating when even strong benchmarks don't cool it down enough for a 10600K processor.

Which standard is used as a reference? What are your operating temperatures when the system is running at full capacity? Please specify the exact voltage value.

I tested Cinebench R20 and used the built-in overclock preset on my motherboard. I found it risky because raising the voltage to 1.350v exceeded my cooler's capacity, causing temperatures above 95°C. Now I stick to the default BIOS settings since they keep me safe. The default voltage appears to be around 1.126v. While playing PUBG, which is demanding on the CPU, my temps stayed between 55-60°C. They seem to stabilize after about 20-30 minutes of use. My concern might just be overreacting. The temperature spikes happen only when I power up the PC.

Idle temps are fine, 45c-50ish c at idle is fine but either way idle temps do not matter, load temps do and they're good.

It seems like the initial readings were just from the startup phase, even though I turned off most programs right away. Once the system stabilized, everything returned to normal after about twenty minutes. I started to feel concerned about possible harm to my brand-new CPU from trying to overclock it too soon.

I run six Intel CPUs boosted above 5GHz. At rest they operate near 32°C, reaching a peak of 91 under benchmarks with AVX and offset support. I pair them with Noctua nh-d15 cooling.
