Not always. The 5800X performs well at stock settings. I own one with custom water cooling; it consistently hits 80-85°C during heavy use, thanks to a -0.075V core voltage offset and the PBO curve optimized for negative 15 across all cores.

This setup appears typical for a stock 5800x model with cooling that isn’t up to par. The MSI cooler might be struggling too, which is typical for Core Liquid designs. They later released the 5700x, which would have matched the 5800x’s cooling performance, keeping temperatures low and maintaining efficiency. As someone who’s owned a 5800x for almost three years, it’s manageable with the right components. A reliable cooler in good condition, strong airflow, and PBO CO undervolting are essential. Even a simple all-core -20 adjustment can significantly improve results.

I understand the 5800x gets quite warm, but not to the extreme levels you mentioned. I've watched clips showing people using NZXT aio and the machine staying cool. I can assure you the aio is likely malfunctioning—refund it and consider alternatives like Corsair or another NZXT aio. I've seen many MSI aio models from the MPG lineup failing, though other series have shown some reliability. Still, based on the videos I've seen, it seems the aio is probably not holding up well.

90C under load was observed. Testing included a NZXT 280 AIO, a CM MasterAir MA620M, and custom water cooling. Only my current configuration stays below 90C quickly when running heavy loads at default settings. My friend with the 5800X and a Noctua NH D15 also experiences similar issues. Thus, 90C alone doesn't indicate an AIO failure. NZXT isn't a miracle solution either; fans on my machine stopped after two months.

It looks like there might be a problem with the AIO model you mentioned. Someone reported comparable high temperatures for a 5800X.

New products don't always mean perfect quality; many fail early or over time. The best reliability starts and ends poorly. If your board or component hasn't activated PBO, it could be faulty. With PBO turned on, the 5000 series runs very hot—especially when Blender is running under load with fans at full speed, causing vents to open wide. Using MSI Kombuster in the mid-90s made me realize this, and I ended up reinstalling my NH-D15 to ensure proper thermal paste application. Surprisingly, the 5000 series performed well once fixed.

At stock levels this part struggles with overheating. Once you go beyond the default settings, the processor delivers significantly better speed. Maintaining a stable temperature is essential. This component can handle high frequencies across several cores.
