I used a large air tower cooler (Deepcool Assassin 3) on my 10900K, but it didn’t go well. Cinebench scores were stuck in the 80s and 90s, with the fan shifting unevenly during heavy loads. The chip’s heat density was overwhelming for even the best setup. Don’t misunderstand, it functioned, but it was frustrating. I had to reattach/reapply it multiple times without improvement. Switching to a 360mm AIO helped more; temperatures stayed stable over time (around 5-6°C drop), and burst loads were handled better by the water. The air cooler needed an immediate power boost during spikes, but it sounded unstable. Overall, the 360 model was quieter and more reliable for daily use.
I performed some basic Prime95 tests at 4800 MHz and it required about 1.20V for stable operation. This led to a power draw just over 250W. Right now I’m using an Intel GPU, so part of that consumption comes from the chip itself. If you intend to run such demanding tasks regularly, you’ll need adequate cooling. For gaming at this frequency, a simple AIO should work fine. I attempted to reach out to the last person you tagged, but they didn’t respond. That makes sense. I also notice the fan noise is quite quiet, almost imperceptible in the forums when lightly loaded.
I wouldn't suggest designing it solely for gaming demands since spike temperatures can remain quite unpredictable. Real-world usage typically draws around 180-200 watts, and prime FFT would likely reach closer to 300 watts—making it unnecessary. Regardless of your choice, downvolting, using stock components, or opting for OC, I wouldn't advise selecting a 240mm solution for that chip.
