I noticed some unusual behavior with my HP Pavilion Gaming 15 I7 9750h GTX 1660ti Max-Q. The first signs appeared about a week before May 7th. It was idling at low temperatures—around 50°C for both CPU and GPU, with the CPU around 53-58°C during Chrome browsing. I assumed it was due to thermal paste, so I reapplied it and the temps stayed the same. On May 7th, after a clean Windows 10 1903 install (previously 1909), the idle temps dropped to 38-40°C for both CPU and GPU, and 43-50°C while watching YouTube with Chrome. This pattern lasted until May 23rd, the morning after I powered it on again, when idle temps returned to 50°C. Additionally, gaming temperatures remained high in the 80s for the CPU, but idle temps were noticeably higher. Could anyone help explain what’s happening? Thank you!

After a clean install, temperatures drop to the 40s again. I reviewed Task Manager for any unusual background processes but didn’t spot anything. Concerning dust and ambient conditions, I suspect they might be impacting gaming performance as well, though idle temps remain higher than before while gaming temps stay the same. The sudden increase in temperatures might point to background factors such as a system update, dust buildup, or general environmental conditions.

I've observed that all my laptops heat up significantly when charging. This includes HP and Asus models, as well as Apple MacBook Pros. My MacBook Pro reaches 80-85°C even while streaming YouTube. I recommend checking temperatures during and without charging, if the issue persists: adjust power settings to balanced, review Task Manager usage, and verify BIOS settings by resetting power and OC defaults. Good luck!

Idle periods hold no significance for laptops since they are extremely sensitive to fluctuations. Even minor adjustments like additional applications running can affect performance. Monitor only load metrics.

I always connect my laptop to a power source, typically around 35-39 watts when not in use, and before the idle threshold goes up to 50. My power settings remain consistent, and I’ve already checked Task Manager with no unusual activity. The BIOS was reset as well. I think I’ll schedule a fresh installation in a few days, and if the idle temperature spikes again, I’ll accept it. Thanks for your reply—I noticed the temperatures during load seem stable so far.
