Processor model: AMD Ryzen 5900x Aio with Corsair 360mm H150 case, Lian Li O11 Dynamic, 6 extra fans. This is my first experience with the AMD ecosystem. I recently swapped out my motherboard and processor. Coming from an Intel setup, I expected cooler temperatures. My i7-9700K idles between 29-34°C while gaming peaks at 60°C. Even when idle in a browser, it reaches up to 70-81°C. This is unusual. I've applied Thermal Grease Kryonaught and Artic MX four times without improvement. My fan settings are well-balanced. Am I having a faulty processor or is there something else I'm missing? Please offer guidance.
It's actually quite typical for a 5900X and Zen 3 setup. AMD's adjustments mean the processor stays warm and speeds up quickly during short, demanding tasks, leading to those noticeable temperature spikes. Good news—no signs of reduced performance or shorter lifespan. You could tweak the fan settings on your AIO if you prefer lower idle temps, but it's not a major concern.
I'd say that's a voltage issue, your chip is drawing more than necessary and it's resulting in those high temps. Just boot into BIOS and manually enter a max of 1.35V on your V-Core. A lot of Ryzen Motherboards push up to 1.45V or more just at idle or in a browser using the default BIOS configuration. But also, the 5900X has nearly double the cores/threads of the 9700K, so higher temperatures definitely make sense.

It's typical even with a 360mm AIO setup. Voltages can rise to 1.5V when idle or under single core stress, causing the CPU temperature to increase noticeably—just one or two cores, not all at once. The remaining cores stay asleep and operate near room temperature. Another factor is the limited cooling area, making it hard for air or water coolers to manage hotspots effectively. You can lower the spike by applying a negative offset voltage; I set mine at -0.05V on my R9 3900X, which reduces the temperature drop by about 10°C during those spikes. You might try even lower values, but be cautious of instability.
The temperatures are typical for Zen 3 when you start it. You should definitely lower the voltage, and it’s really straightforward now thanks to the PBO2 curve optimizer. Just open the BIOS and navigate to the CPU overclocking section. Look for the Precision Boost Overdrive option and choose Advanced for extra settings. Turn off power limits, adjust the offset to negative (meaning undervolt), and input a value between -30 and 150mV in steps of 3-5mV. Most Zen 3 chips can handle up to 30mV, though you may need to reduce it slightly. Save your changes and restart the system. It’s quite simple. For my 5900X model, this reduced my temps by a full 10°C, allowing me to hit 4.5GHz across all cores and up to 4.95GHz on single-core tasks. Incredible performance!
