DOSBox and Windows 7's XP Mode MS-DOS side by side: DOSBox shows serious visual problems, while XP Mode can't fill the entire screen. PCem often struggles with volume settings, and some users face issues when using NTVDM. Real old hardware feels tough to manage, and non-ISA sound cards in NTVDM cause problems, especially with game builds. Every setting seems to have drawbacks. The setup I used worked best, but adding an ISA sound card would have been ideal.
I purchased a basic Compaq Evo from eBay several years ago for $50. I found a DVD-ROM drive for $10, a used Seagate 40 GB HDD for $20 to add authenticity, and installed XP on it. An old HP monitor cost $10, while the Dell keyboard and mouse (including the roller-ball tracking and pointing stick!) were bought together on the FB marketplace for $10, creating a nostalgic setup. This allowed me to enjoy classic titles like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Sim City 3000 for around $100. While it might seem expensive to some, I personally favor retro games over new ones, making this investment worthwhile for me.
That device supports DOS titles as well. I tend to use older OSes with modern hardware. I'm currently using Windows 2000 on an FX 8320E and HD 6970.
