Hello,
I chose to post this question here because this appears to be a hub for tech-savvy individuals, and I find it hard to pick the ideal computer to purchase.
Currently, as a translator, I realized I need something more capable after receiving a 21,000-page PDF to work with. My existing machine struggles significantly with such files. Refusing the assignment was necessary since my current setup isn’t suited for large documents. Searching with Ctrl+F takes around four minutes on my device. I use a 2015 13-inch Intel Macbook Pro running Windows.
I generally dislike Windows and PCs, but I believe a Windows-based PC is essential for running certain applications. I was weighing laptop versus desktop options. A laptop would need a superb keyboard, a 100 sRGB display, a good range of ports, reliability, durability, and ease of repair or upgrading (such as adding storage or RAM). It should also have a trackpoint. I’ve looked into Thinkpad workstations, but I’m not impressed—they often use poor sales approaches and offer subpar screens. For a decent display (at least 99% sRGB), I’d need to invest at least 2000 euros.
I was also considering a desktop tower, as it might offer similar power at a lower cost. Alternatively, spending around 800 euros on a desktop PC could be a smart choice since its components are likely more robust. However, I’m uncertain about its power consumption. If it uses a lot of energy, I’d prefer to buy a laptop now rather than face rising electricity bills later.
Additionally, I was thinking about purchasing a 2023 Macbook Pro for running Windows via Parallels.
Do anyone have any suggestions or advice? I rarely handle files that big, but I want prepared for such tasks.

Budget: 2500 EUR, but I’d prefer to spend less
Notebook size: 15,6", 16", 17"
Screen resolution: 1920x1080, 2560x1440
Portable or desktop laptop: A bit bulky is acceptable
Battery life: More is better, though not essential
Gaming: Not required, but the laptop should handle games smoothly if needed for translation work
Other tasks: Photo/video editing, some programming, general use
Storage: 512 GB would be ideal, preferably with at least two drive bays
Preferred retailers: Please share links if you have any
Longevity: I’d like to keep the laptop for at least five years
Optical drive: No need for DVD ROM/Writer or Bluray ROM
Country of residence: France
Additional notes: Thinkpads attract me due to the keyboard, but their sales tactics and screen quality are disappointing. I don’t want to be pressured into buying something unnecessary.
Thank you for your attention.

The Asus Zenbook Pro 17 UM6702 priced around 1,700 EUR seems like a solid choice. Its compact design makes it ideal for professional tasks on a 17-inch screen with a resolution of 2560x1440. The factory setup includes a Ryzen 9 processor and 32GB of RAM, making it well-suited for any demanding workspace. You should have no concerns about its long-term performance if you choose this model.
