Last night I attempted to power on my computer to enjoy playing 'Sons of the Forest' with friends. While switching it on, it immediately went through the BIOS and displayed a warning about high CPU temperature. I thought maybe cleaning the fans or applying thermal paste would help. It worked temporarily, dropping to around 40°C for a couple of minutes before returning to 100°C. After unplugging the airflow hoses and cleaning them thoroughly—no dirt or dust found—I restarted the PC. It stayed at 100°C even after turning it back on, which is unusual since my new i9 9900K and ASUS ROG Strix Z390i motherboard are only a year old. I’m starting to suspect the CPU and motherboard might be nearing the end of their lifespan. If anyone has any advice or a potential fix—like replacing the AIO or swapping parts—I’d really appreciate it.

If the AIO is brand new, it might be faulty. Would you like me to attempt a return?

I don’t believe it’s the AI because it’s been functioning well. I’m considering linking it to my CPU, but I’m holding off on spending money until I understand the problem better.

the only other possibility is poor mounting, inadequate paste, or insufficient airflow, though i question it because aios need time to fill their thermal capacity.

I use an Nzxt h1 v2 case with my RTX 3080, and keeping it fully enclosed has prevented overheating issues. In fact, I had to completely redesign the interior to fit my card, but I've never experienced any overheating. If it's really the CPU that's causing trouble—especially since it's a model from a year ago—I'm furious with Intel. It's been sitting in my room since I bought it new, until I finally built a custom rig for gaming. Now it's pushing me to its limits. Spending a lot of time and money to make this work is impressive, haah.

I use an Nzxt h1 v2 case with my RTX 3080, and keeping it fully enclosed has prevented overheating issues. If it's really the CPU that's causing trouble—especially since it's a model from a year ago—I'm furious with Intel. Your reasoning seems off a few points. 1) Your CPU and board are probably not at the end of anything. 2) You didn’t mention what kind of AIO you’re using. 3) Please share some pictures for better understanding.

I observed a red light on the motherboard, which is compatible with a Z390i and an i9 9900k processor.

Temps that high in the bios have very few options: 1) The cooler is installed poorly 2) There's no heatsink paste on it 3) the pump isn't running.
