I usually worked on my PC, then quit a game and opened Adobe Premiere to keep a project running. Suddenly my computer slowed down with a high CPU usage. I thought it was a glitch, so I turned it off. After a while, I restarted it and the CPU stayed at 100%. In Task Manager, all processes looked busy, but the Resource Manager showed every core at full capacity. I tried stopping all startup programs, but the issue persisted. When I booted into Safe Mode, the CPU was still at 100%. I installed Process Hacker 2, which displayed normal processes but flagged a System Idle process at 99%. It’s odd since the PC didn’t slow down, yet it was getting very hot—like it was rendering a video. My Intel i5-6600K wasn’t overclocked for four years.

Consider updating the latest firmware for the chipset.

I started with Kubuntu and didn’t encounter any CPU problems, which was great since I planned to reinstall Windows. Fortunately, I had a recent restore from seven days ago while installing a game, allowing Windows to partially recover. Now the CPU is functioning normally again. I’m not sure what caused the issue on Windows.
