recently my computer tends to take up to 30 minutes to shut down or sometimes doesn't shut down at all. i’m not sure what’s causing this because i always close all open apps before ending the session. normally it logs off smoothly, showing the shutdown screen, and then stays that way for about half an hour. i have to press the power button just to finish shutting it down. oddly enough, my mouse and keyboard stay on even after the shutdown. when it goes into sleep mode, the screen turns off but the system remains active. same happens during the shutdown process—my mouse and keyboard stay lit. this is frustrating because i leave the room and come back five hours later still seeing the screen indicate a shutdown. (note: i’m using Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1).

Replacing the CMOS battery might help. The disk drive could be affected in some way, or the power supply might be faulty (though that seems unlikely).

I faced the same issue as well; reinstalling didn't resolve it. It disappeared only after upgrading the CPU and HDD. The exact cause remains unclear to me.

enable verbose mode, there is a registry hack for that Open regedit.exe, say yes to the UAC prompt navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System Right click on the right panel, select NEW, and create a new 32-bit DWORD. Name it VerboseStatus, give it a value of 1. Reboot, and done.

It might be the hard drive. I had an issue with it before, so I'll verify. If an upgrade is necessary, I should begin saving up!

You may also wish to check for viruses. Certain programs operate quietly in the background and remain unnoticed, which helps avoid halting the system.

I ran two virus checks—boot-up and full system—and neither worked properly.
