System restarts occur prior to user access to operating system.
The problem started gradually, without any noticeable steps in between. The PC would usually restart before reaching the OS login screen or immediately after trying to log in. I tested this on both my primary Linux system and my Windows installation. The main difference was that with Windows, I could reliably reach the login screen, which is uncommon on Linux.
Components used:
- i5 13600K (with Noctua NH-D15S)
- Gigabyte Z790 Aero G
- 2x48GB GSkill DDR5 6400
- PNY 1080Ti
- 1TB Samsung 980PRO + 2TB Samsung 980PRO
- Corsair HX850 (2013 model)
What I tried to fix:
- Restarted BIOS to default settings and lowered Gigabyte preset to its lowest level (avoiding E-Core disable)
- Disabled XMP profile
- Removed one RAM stick, swapped it with another
- Removed the dedicated GPU, using only the integrated one
No changes seemed to help. My suspicion is that the power supply unit, CPU, and memory modules are likely causing the issue. The PSU might be outdated now, which could explain the instability. I’m considering upgrading to an HX1200i next, since I’ve been thinking about a GPU upgrade eventually. I wouldn’t rule out the CPU as a factor, especially given Intel’s recent performance issues. It would be strange if there were no problems, but the 600-series chips have been stable so far. Anyone has experience with this situation?
