System restarts into BIOS automatically
Hey there! I haven't assembled a machine since the late '90s, which makes me a bit outdated. I have a fairly inexpensive used one without hard drives or a GPU from a friend. His GPU broke, so I bought a replacement. When I tried to boot it, I kept seeing the "4F" error. I ordered a new BIOS chip, and now I can access the BIOS settings, but I'm still stuck there. I have Windows installed on a USB drive, but even after changing the boot order and disabling Fast Boot, it always brings me back to the BIOS screen. (My other computer is a Mac, and I made the installation media using Boot Camp. Could that be the problem?) MB: EVGA z170 Stinger CPU: i7 6700K RAM: 8GB DDR4 GPU: GTX 1660 Ti When the computer starts up, it often freezes on error code 62 (South Bridge Runtime Services installation), and then it restarts. The issue seems to happen only the second time. Since I've never worked with a computer this old, any advice would be really appreciated.
6700k is compatible with Z170. All hardware appears correctly in BIOS—drives and USB sticks show up in both the devices list and boot order. When you select the USB drive, it doesn’t launch into the Windows installer. Try erasing the USB and rebuilding it. Boot camp should then work for generating the installation media. If it still doesn’t boot, consider a fresh wipe of the drive.
It appears the setup works properly with the installed SSD. On USB, all ports are enabled in settings and the keyboard functions correctly. Boot order is configured via UEFI. Attempts to use the Windows installer from a USB key or an external SSD have failed, leaving me uncertain about the issue.
