Hi everyone, my computer I built four months ago stopped working last night. I was fine until I connected the hard drive for a minute, then opened File Explorer and the PC shut down instantly. Now pressing the power button causes the PSU to click without doing anything. After checking various guides, I suspect a short circuit is the issue. I unplugged everything, tried jump-starting the SF750 using a paper clip—it spun briefly before stopping. Turning off the PSU made it spin again briefly, which is normal (zero RPM). It seems the problem might be elsewhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My mainboard is an Asus B660-I with an air cooler and the SF750 PSU; memory sticks were swapped and I purchased it a month ago.
Did you connect a hard drive or an external USB device? Was it plugged into the front panel of your case? If yes, yes, and yes, there could be USB problems—perhaps the headers aren't connected correctly. Unplug all non-essential components, restart the system, and then proceed step by step, adding notes until you identify the source of the issue.
I connected the USB hard drive via a USB C hub straight into the mainboard. All other connections were removed except the 24-pin and CPU cables from the power supply. The issue persists with the same clicking from the PSU—could there be a short circuit inside the mainboard?
Is the motherboard inside the case? There could be a connection issue. Consider assembling it separately from the case, such as using a separate motherboard box.
Do you still possess the old PSU? It seems you might be quite unlucky, as using the external drive via USB caused enough trouble that the PSU can no longer recover. The clip test is helpful but not entirely reliable. The fan speeds increase and then drops when the power switch is pressed to turn it on—it acts as a basic self-check. If a PSU encounters a problem under higher load, it may not become apparent until then. Just try the older PSU if you haven’t already.
I've verified the motherboard connectors; they appear okay and look decent. I don't have a replacement PSU. The power cables are standard Corsair ones. The PSU still works with both the 24-pin and 8-pin CPU connectors when I performed the jumpstart test, suggesting everything is functioning properly. The mainboard LED no longer lights up during startup as it did before.
I don't own the previous power supply since I sold my old computer.
It's understandable, but I recommend checking out borrowing a device or bringing your computer to a nearby store to test with a different power supply. Since yours is brand new, it might be fixed under warranty.
