System reserves 1028MB of memory permanently
Encountering a peculiar problem with the Gigabyte GA-D525TUD board. No matter the RAM type or slot, the OS always shows 1028MB reserved (Windows 7 Pro x86). It might be using either 2x2GB or 1x4GB in any slot, yet the reserved amount stays unchanged. The system won’t boot with just 1GB of RAM sticks. I suspect it’s allocating all that for the iGPU, similar to older Intel machines where 1GB is set aside. Can I reallocate it? There doesn’t appear to be a BIOS option, but I’ll look into it. Thanks!
I realized one of my Gigabyte Athlon 64 models shares a comparable configuration, so I guess the Atom model’s BIOS might not support it.
Do you have the board I mentioned? With the correct memory it should actually support 8GB, though I might be confusing my Atom or Ion setup. It doesn’t really make much difference when using Windows because the CPU becomes a bottleneck, but on Linux it performs better since you can adjust the swappiness to utilize more RAM. I’m pretty sure this is the iGPU memory slot, and it’s been a while since I dealt with that part—I can’t remember exactly. If you’re unsure, just restart the BIOS to the default settings. It could be that I was trying to use more iGPU memory than was automatically assigned.
Yup, that's the board. It can do 8gb, I have tested, but there is no point in my use case since I'm using a 32 bit OS currently. Thanks, will reset the BIOS tonight.
The manual on page 31 mentions the video memory but doesn’t explain its full potential. It claims overclocking is possible, though it seems the BIOS lacked that feature in the version you used. It likely got removed from the documentation.
