System powering off upon starting a game on your PC
Today (it functioned well two days prior) I started playing Rocket League and my PC immediately shut down. It happens with Hogwarts Legacy and possibly other games I haven’t played, but it works just fine with War Thunder, for instance. I’m unsure what’s causing this—I assumed the new AMD drivers I installed were the issue, but even with older ones it still occurs. Temperatures are normal and I haven’t overclocked anything. My setup includes a 6900XT, Ryzen 9 5900X, and a Seasonic 850W Platinum PSU.
Review the WHEA logs in the event viewer. Look for core drops and overheating warnings. If overheating occurs instantly, consider undervoltage or adjusting the operating current.
Confirmed all PSU connections leading to your GPU. For certain models, like the 6900XT, some systems require three distinct 8-pin PCIe PWR cables from the PSU, whereas others work with just two.
In the viewer I see only a 6008 shutdown not planned issue. The crash happens very quickly after launching the game, and now Rocket League is functioning properly again, except for Hogwarts Legacy. Also, the system restarts instantly when I press the button. I haven’t changed the voltage or overclocked anything.
I’m working with a 6900XT XFX MERC that has just two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. I plan to shut down the system and inspect the cables.
The wires seem okay. I'm employing two distinct cables instead of a single one that splits.
I believe the cables are properly linked to the PCI-E ports on your modular power supply, not to any arbitrary connections.
Consider using GPU-Z or similar tools to verify if shutdowns happen after the GPU draws a certain amount of power. If it shuts down because of power loss, you'll likely see "EventID 41 Kernel-Power" in the event viewer rather than "6008 shutdown not planned." This site offers several potential fixes you might try: https://windowsreport.com/event-viewer-error-6008/. As a guess, you could test these options:
- CPU overheating – monitor temperature while idle and during gameplay.
- Bad driver – uninstall everything via DDU and reinstall AMD drivers.
- Faulty PSU – check if the power supply is functioning correctly or inspect any cables.
During the stress test on AIDA 64, the system frequently crashes due to FPU or cache issues. It seems the internet browser might also trigger crashes. Is there a memory-related concern?
