System power-off behavior during idle or under load
System power-off behavior during idle or under load
Hey there, I'm just getting started with this channel after searching online and watching many videos of Linus. I'm hoping I've found the right place to get help with my PC issues. English or German works for me, especially if someone prefers to communicate in German. Thanks!
I'm experiencing problems where my PC shuts down unexpectedly—whether it's when idle, under load, or during startup. When it fails, I can't restart it easily and can't recreate the situation to test something. It seems like there are some persistent issues that keep coming back: crashes within minutes, long periods of inactivity (hours or days), and occasional reboots.
I suspect the problem might be related to my power supply or motherboard, but I'm not sure. I've tried checking logs like Reliability Monitor, Event Viewer, HWiNFO64 info, and system logs, but nothing concrete yet.
If you need more details, feel free to share everything. I'll keep adding what I learn. I really hope someone can help me figure this out. I'll stay in touch and reach out anytime. That would be great since my next move is to take my PC to a repair shop. Thanks a lot!
I completely understand, that was my mistake. The PSU I’m using is the Be Quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 11 CM 850W. You can find more details here: https://www.bequiet.com/de/powersupply/1255
Your system appears to be from around 2018, recently upgraded with the 3080 chip about two years prior.
Begin by adjusting your memory to 3000mhz. Since the second kit is only 3k, ensure the maximum speed matches the slowest RAM. Verify stability improvements. Disconnect all four HDDs—only use the NVMe drives. I suspect defective HDDs have caused shutdowns before. Perform a single test change: downclock memory first, then test. After that, remove the HDDs completely, including power and SATA connections. You also have many USB devices; if the system still crashes, try removing them all except the mouse and keyboard. Are these cooling units water or air? How many fans are active?
I purchased the 3080, a brand new PSU and mainboard, along with two 8GB RAM sticks all at once when I acquired the GPU—likely a year ago but second-hand. The remaining components might date back to around 2018, so your guess is probably correct.
Consider exchanging the RAM modules to pair with the slower unit, which will enable XMP settings from that slower configuration. It should automatically adjust to 3000 MHz and apply its timing parameters.
Thank you for your feedback. I plan to revisit this later, but unfortunately I had to disconnect my PC for at least this weekend so I’ll return and update you on its progress. Regarding your question, I’m unsure how to assess stability without recreating the issue. I understand stress tests or benchmarks are common, yet my system seems to handle them smoothly sometimes while others fail. Based on past experiences, crashes don’t always match test results—sometimes it starts fine and then stops unexpectedly. If you can’t recreate the problem, it might be hard to determine if stability has genuinely improved. Let me know if you’d like more guidance!
