Hello everyone, this is my debut in this group. I hope everyone is thriving this new year. I’m reaching out for assistance with a few ongoing problems I’ve been dealing with. My hardware specs are: processor i7 9700k (not overclocked), motherboard Z390 Aorus PRO, latest RAM Corsair 32GB (8x4) DDR4 at 3200Mhz, graphics RTX 3080 FE with 10GB RAM, storage setup includes a 5400 2TB HDD, a 500GB Samsung EVO NVMe SSD, and a 1TB WD Black SN850x NVMe SSD. Power supply is Corsair RM 1000x (1000W), I have a cooler master CPU tower cooler, a 140mm x 1 Corsair exhaust, and a 120mm x 6 Corsair exhaust/intake fan. The monitor is a Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 (4K) with Windows 11 Pro (22H2).

The issue I’m experiencing is that the system occasionally freezes during game launches—sometimes right after starting, sometimes after playing for a few minutes or even an hour. There’s no consistent pattern; it happens with both intense AAA games and lighter indie titles. I’ve checked CPU, GPU, and SSD usage with monitoring tools, but noticed that while the GPU memory temperature peaks at around 106°C, other metrics stay normal. The SSD feels excessively hot to the touch right after a crash, even though its readings before freezing are under 65°C.

Interestingly, neither SSD has ever reached such high temperatures before freezing, and I don’t have a thermal camera to verify. About three months ago, one of the GPU power cables from the PSU melted. After replacing it with another from Corsair in a different port, the problem stopped. The power draw at full load is roughly 550-600W. I’m considering getting both the GPU and PSU replaced under warranty, but I’m wondering if the storage drive might be the culprit. I’d really appreciate any advice to help pinpoint the faulty component and avoid the hassle of a long return process. Thank you all for your support!

Have you verified the drives using Hard Disk Sentinel?

Verify firmware is current, confirm the secondary PSU connector is meant for GPU, ensure adequate airflow. What are your CPU temperatures? You might also tweak the GPU fan speed curve to observe improvements.

Sorry for the delayed reply, things came up unexpectedly. Thanks for getting back so quickly. The GPU firmware and drivers are current. HDD Sentinel indicates temperatures are normal, but when the system freezes, the SSD feels uncomfortably hot and I can't retrieve logs despite various attempts. @Bdavis the connection from the PSU to the GPU is correct. I have sufficient airflow and set up a +pressure configuration that has functioned reliably for over two years. CPU temperatures are within range. Three months ago I reapplied thermal paste and cleaned the CPU cooler, but increasing the GPU fan speed didn't resolve the freezing problem. I suspect the issue might be related to the power supply or motherboard, though it’s not clear. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't refer to the drive temperatures, I was talking about the drive health.

For Windows users, open Power Management settings and make sure "Maximum Performance" is chosen. I experienced an issue where the system automatically switched to power-saving mode upon startup, which significantly reduced GPU usage.

Health on the drive is all right. The image attached adds to the confusion about this overheating problem. It's definitely Windows 11 64-bit 22H2, with maximum performance enabled.
