System freezes during gameplay or when idle, displaying a black screen.
Hey there, I’m facing an odd problem and wondering if anyone has dealt with it before. I just installed a new PC with these settings: - CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
- GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 5080 OC (16GB)
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 (BIOS F2, Feb 2025, now updated)
- PSU: ASUS ROG Loki 1000W Platinum SFX
- OS: Windows 11 Pro (Build 26100)
My issues: The machine crashes with a black screen and the fan spins nonstop during gameplay. Audio drops after just a few seconds, and I’m forced to perform a hard reset. This happens only in this game—not in any other title or benchmark. Stability checks show 3DMark Time Spy Extreme runs smoothly, GPU temps hover around 65°C.
What I’ve tried so far:
- Replaced GPU and 12VHPWR cable firmly
- Updated BIOS to the latest version
- Ran DDU in Safe Mode with fresh NVIDIA drivers
- Turned off Hardware-Accelerated GPU scheduling
- Enabled DBD in DX11 mode, limited GPU power to 90% via Afterburner
- Cleared shader cache and logs
It seems like this might be a strange engine or voltage problem with UE4 and the RTX 50 series. Any advice or insights would be super helpful.
Check the Windows Event Viewer under System logs. If you can't recall the last time, launch the viewer, reset all entries, and attempt to trigger the problem again while noting the timestamp. After restarting, look down at the relevant time and see if any entries appear that could help identify the cause.
I'm interested in checking for the nvlddmkm error. How many of them are there or just one? The Nvidia driver usually attempts recovery several times. If it keeps happening, look for when the error was logged relative to when your PC shut down. As a reminder, a faulty PSU could be the cause—this has happened to me before, initially I blamed the GPU but later realized it was the power supply.
It succeeded once more during daytime play, though there was no nvlddmkm mistake. Around 3:32 PM it occurred.
