Yeah, sorry was running out of time earlier Open finder press the detail view, the lines to show the details or what ever you want to call it lol. Then press the settings icon or gear and select show view options and calculate all file sizes then you will have to wait a bit, then go for a hunt for the biggest file then google it and see if its relevant, My guess is that you used to have el capitan or Yosemite and then upgraded and for whatever reason some of the old files didn't get deleted. You could also give ccleaner a try to see if that clears anything up.

I attempted but I’m unsure what caused the delay; however, the storage status indicates it’s the system.

Refer to the finder method from your previous message and check the site for hidden files on your Mac to locate the large file. The disk tool indicates it resides in a hidden area.

The link points to instructions for Mavericks, but the steps remain identical.

The total size adds up to something much lower than 300+ GB. There must be another approach involved.

I don’t have an alternative solution, but you could try using the drive utility for first aid.

Curious about what occurs when you begin copying a large file. I’m running low on ideas, sorry.

You're welcome! It seems the system file has been reduced to 40 GB. Let me know if you need further assistance!
