Lately my HDD has been having issues with crashes and getting stuck during loading. Sometimes it shows up in the bottom right corner like a USB connection was made, but since I don’t have hotplug enabled, it’s confusing. The drive still works and appears afterward. In Steam, when it crashes to the desktop for a second, it says “install on the game” before restarting. The Event Viewer reports problems with network, disk, or storage drivers, or that the disk is missing. I’ve checked the SATA and power cables, everything looks good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Use Hard Disk Sentinel CrystalDiskInfo HDTune Free with a sector check (not the quick one). Run cmd.exe as administrator: Chkdsk drive_letter: /scan, then restart. Next, execute chkdsk drive_letter: /f to fix issues, followed by sfc /scannow to update drivers via Driver Booster. Consider switching to an SSD.
Crystal disk info reports caution on reallocated sectors count but it has done this for ages and hasnt caused any problems like what im expeirencing now. HD tune free came back with no damaged blocks and all the cmd scans came back with nothing. Just installed hard disk sentinel now and here is what it says.
It wouldn’t be as enjoyable if the gadget failed while under warranty, that’s a definite no-go. The good news is storage options have become affordable, with a 1 tb SSD available around $40 these days.
