System failure and dark screen issues after BIOS upgrade on Windows 10 installation
I chose to start a new Windows installation because it’s been several years. My BIOS was also quite old, so I updated it to version 2603. Since the BIOS update, my PC has been blue-screening often—multiple tries were needed before Windows finally installed. After around four attempts, I got it working, but now it keeps blue-screening. Details: motherboard ASUS X Hero (WiFi AC), CPU i7 8700k, 32GB DDR4 RAM, GPU EVGA FTW3 RTX 3080, new BIOS version 2603.
Coincidence is not causality. The possibility that the bios is corrupted is non zero. That you just happened to develop a memory fault at just that time (or it makes you use more memory or something) is also no zero though. If you reflash the bios and the problem doesn’t go away perhaps a couple full rounds of memtest86 is in order. Also a chkdsk. Edited October 28, 2022 by Bombastinator
I attempted several BIOS updates using various USB ports. Next, I’ll run a chkdsk and perform a memtest.
It's frustrating, but things could have been worse. It's strange how this came about after the BIOS update. I'm curious if it's related to the RAM or maybe a faulty slot.
