System fails to power on after inserting the graphics card.
I assembled my older PC after a clean-up, intending to list it, with only a PSU upgrade from 750W to 500W. The MSI G45-Z87 board, paired with G.Skill 2x8GB DDR3, Intel 4770K, and Radeon R9 290X, boots without any errors or beeps once the GPU is installed. All fans operate normally, even the GPU, and video output remains absent despite having onboard graphics. Removing the GPU results in immediate startup, as expected with the built-in graphics. Clearing the CMOS didn’t make a difference. Is the GPU faulty? It could have been damaged during cleaning or the PSU isn’t providing enough power, though 500W should suffice for booting. The total components should draw around 498W at their maximum power limits, and there are no visible signs of GPU damage.
There are power spikes equipped with GPUs... Suggested minimum is 600W for a setup using a 290X.
Consider installing the GPU on another machine if possible and check for booting; this may help determine if it's faulty.
I'll add it to your latest setup to check. It's a bit of a challenge since your present PSU only has one GPU power block cable available.
Also consider checking the power supply’s specifications for the 12V rail—it should be listed there. For older PSUs, the rating might only be around 350W on that rail. You could also try disconnecting the GPU while keeping it installed and see if it boots normally; if it doesn’t appear, the GPU is likely the issue. Just to be curious, what cleaning agents did you use?
