Hello, and good holidays to you, Mighty Brains!
I encountered an unusual issue that I've never faced before.
I play CP2077 on my PC via Steam, and the game is installed on a Samsung SSD 860 Evo with 500GB capacity, leaving 40GB remaining. The drive properties confirm it's an NTFS file type.
Living in Alaska’s remote areas, my internet speed is quite slow—around 5mbps during good days. Because of that, installing large games often means waiting several days for the download to complete so I can use the fastest possible connection.
Recently, this problem has occurred twice, each right after a new update was released.
Here’s what happened step by step:
-I installed CP2077 on my NTFS C: drive with ample space.
-After a few days of smooth downloading, it finished overnight (about two days after the official release).
-The next morning, I woke up to a 3.9GB update waiting to install—so I couldn’t play at all.
-Trying to update the fully installed game didn’t work; it froze and said “Unsupported File Type.”
-I experimented with minor adjustments, but nothing changed. Online searches yielded no results for my situation.
-I removed the game completely and re-downloaded it for a few days.
-Finally, after a full reinstall, everything worked perfectly! I played for around 30 hours, through Act 2 and several side quests. It was quite enjoyable.
-The following day, with another update arriving, the same issue resurfaced: a 3.9GB update was pending, refusing to download due to “Unsupported File Type,” even though the game ran smoothly on my drive.
-Today’s search revealed only basic information about this error. The only guidance seems to be confirming the disk type is NTFS, not FAT32.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Nerds!
System specs:
- Ryzen 5 3600, 6-core, 4GHz
- 16GB RAM (probably Sapphire)
- RX 570 graphics card
- MB: B-550
- Standard peripherals, decent airflow cooling.

Consider using Disk Manager to verify the drive isn't partitioned.
Try Samsung Magician if you haven't already, as it might detect some problems.
A 40gb free space on a 500gb drive should provide sufficient buffer, but I'd aim for 15-20% (75-100 gb) and check if that fixes the issue.

I think the 40gb left isn't sufficient for swapping files properly. Just a guess, though.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll consider what's necessary. Based on that, what would your brain recommend as the lowest acceptable amount? It feels unnecessary to just add another 2 GB... but I'm really limited to maybe a bit more than 50-100 MB. I'll experiment either way. Preesh
