System crashes unexpectedly without clear reason.
In June I upgraded my CPU, motherboard, and RAM simultaneously. My setup changed from a 4790k, x79, DDR3 configuration to an i9-9900k, MSI Z390 MPG Gaming Edge AC with the latest BIOS, and a 16GB T-Force 3600MHz DDR4 memory (XMP profile). All components were brand new. After the upgrade I noticed occasional BSODs that didn’t occur before. There are also screen freezes where the display stays on the last image, and I can only force restart the PC via the power button. I recently reinstalled Windows and experienced fewer crashes for a few months, but recently they’ve become more frequent—sometimes multiple times per hour. After two Windows resets, the problem worsened to about once every 24 hours. Currently I’m running a minimal install to remove drivers, suspecting some hardware may be faulty. I don’t have spare parts and no consistent triggers for crashes. The Windows error code changes each time, and the Memory Checker shows no issues. Any suggestions?
Received two issues today; the WHEA error code isn’t being handled properly. This kind of driver problem is pretty frequent. Most error descriptions just suggest checking drivers, which seems to be the case here. I’ve tried updating everything as much as possible, including the Windows update. 121219-8687-01.dmp
I tested Memtestx86 overnight with no issues. Some drives show up times of about 500 to 600 seconds, but S.M.A.R.T reports they’re all fine.
Check the event viewer, as there should be a record for WHEA errors showing the cause.
No records logged in hardware events. Only critical faults appear, such as the one noted. Power connections were questioned but system resumed normally. Google advises verifying power sources; I’ll review after work. I verified the power connections and everything looks good. I refreshed the Windows installation twice. The first refresh made the problem worse, causing more frequent screen freezes without a BSOD. The second refresh reduced the frequency but still occurred. From the logs, I suspected an issue with the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, so I didn’t install it this time.
