System crashes unexpectedly due to hardware or software issues
Hey everyone! I just installed a new PC with these specs: an Intel i9 13900 CPU, MSI Z970 Tomahawk motherboard with Wi-Fi, 32GB of GSKill Trident RAM at 6400 MHz DDR5, and a Nvidia 4090 GPU. After setup, I started noticing BSODs and MemTest86 reported hardware address issues. The Windows memory diagnostic also flagged some errors. I swapped in the same RAM kit, but it still showed similar problems in MemTest86. I checked each slot separately at 4800 MHz and found no issues. These glitches appeared within 5 to 10 minutes of the initial test and lasted about 30 minutes across all configurations. What might be causing these problems?
Did you achieve any stability in Windows right away? Or did it begin immediately? I recently installed a Ryzen system during setup for Windows 11, and I faced memory problems right from the start. After installing the chipset drivers, things improved slightly, but crashes continued. A missing Microsoft C++ Redist package resolved the memory issues, though it might not be the exact same problem. In my experience, it’s important to verify the power connector is secure on the 4090 and that the CPU power cables are firmly connected. You could also try using a single DIMM or different memory channels.
Updated a few things. 1. Tested new RAM with XMP in Auto mode (previously link mode), no issues during normal operation. 2. Tried old RAM with XMP in Auto mode; encountered a problem within 10 minutes. 3. Currently using old RAM without XMP, no errors observed so far (test lasted about 20 minutes). Seems XMP might be causing problems here. I’ll check the recommendations again. Also, I missed something—I made a clone of my Windows install from an older SSD, then installed Windows 11 and reinstalled it.
Immediately after, I saw the games begin to crash and display error messages. Indeed, the chipset drivers were confirmed working and all connections were firmly in place. Refer to my earlier update for the testing results!
XMP could be misreading the memory speed. Try locating your exact timing settings and check if they were entered manually in the BIOS to improve stability when using a manual clock.
