Hey everyone! I received around 300€ as a Christmas bonus from work, and I was considering purchasing an R7 5800x3d. With that amount, I’d just need about 70€ extra. I could also get an Asus Prime B450M-K motherboard from my brother and reuse my old RAM. That would bring the total cost down to roughly 70€.

Right now I’m running an i5 8600k and have already overclocked it, which is causing some odd behavior and occasional weak performance. On the graphics side, I have a 3070 GPU and play at 1440p ultra wide. Usually a CPU bottleneck shouldn’t be an issue there, but I’ve experienced 30 frames stuttering in Blade & Sorcery and some crashes in Witcher 3 lately. I’m weighing this upgrade and would appreciate any advice before making a decision.

The performance boost from spending €70 is substantial. I’d definitely suggest it.

I haven’t seen any comparisons between the 8600k and the 5800x3d, maybe because the i5 8600k is outdated now. The 5800x3d offers only a slight boost in performance for gaming and VR.

I wouldn't merge those components. This board suffers from poor weak VRM performance. A Ryzen 5 5600 would be the best CPU choice. Have you thought about using an Intel i5 12400f with a B660 board and DDR4 support? I think that could fit within around 370€.

I didn’t consider it since I’d pair it with a motherboard, making the 370€ manageable. I thought I could already get one from my brother. Do you believe the VRAM issue might affect performance more seriously? Since I plan to upgrade the motherboard later, I want to invest most of this bonus into a CPU that won’t need updating for years. Given the 5800X3D is still one of the top gaming CPUs, I think it’s worth choosing that option.

the 5800X3D doesn't consume a lot of power, so this board might be suitable for it. I think it's worth testing it out... and if it fails, a B450 or B550 with good voltage regulation and cooling isn't that costly.

Updating the BIOS on the Z370 board and verifying it works. Also confirming the Windows version. Intel systems usually behave predictably.

If it's turned off, the system will not proceed with the current action.

It seems you're noticing many discussions about rebar affecting performance and planning for tomorrow.
