Switching to Linux means choosing a distribution and checking current hardware compatibility.
Hey there! I’m trying to move from Windows 10 to Linux, but it’s not because of Windows 11. It’s mainly due to the annoying bugs and missing features I’ve been facing. Here are some of my problems: I can’t use the search function anymore, have to reinstall after updates because of crashes, escape strings while coding, setting path variables often needs a reboot, and every time I restart I have to set up 15 desktops from scratch. The software I need is: Discord Photoshop (it works okay on a VM), Google Filestream (maybe just a mounted Google Drive), and my hardware is a Bose QC 35 II with a Ryzen 3700x, 64GB RAM, and a few other components. I’ve looked at several Linux distros but am still unsure about Manjaro. I’m not a beginner, I’ve used Debian and Raspbian for years, but Linux desktop environments have always been a bit frustrating, especially with docking stations and other non-standard devices. Luckily, I don’t use a laptop that requires special setups anymore, which should make the switch easier. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
There are no bugs or missing features in Linux. The BSOD might not be due to your hardware, as it could appear differently on Linux. Discord ✔ Photoshop - Use https://www.photopea.com ? Google Filestream - I haven't used it, but searching https://www.insynchq.com seems to function on Linux. Set it up from scratch for me. No issues with pairing it to my earbuds and DS4 controller.
I have a setup somewhat similar to yours: Discord and BT headphones work without any problems (I have an USB BT dongle, fwiw). Photoshop under a libvirt VM should be okaish. Keep in mind that there's no hw accel. As for google drive, I've heard about some programs that can sync stuff, but I've never personally used any of those (other than the native one under gnome). I don't really like manjaro. It tries to make arch easier, but lacks proper QA and the devs often break stuff in dumb ways. I'd recommend EndeavourOS if you want something Arch-based, but that doesn't stray too far from the official distro. Another option would be PopOS!. I've seen many people saying good things about it.
I’d prefer GIMP since it’s a fresh alternative that resembles Photoshop but operates differently. Other choices include Photopea, VM Photoshop, and Gimp.
It varies based on the purpose, but Krita works well as an alternative.
You're suggesting a workaround using GIMP on Linux and Photoshop in a VM. It seems like you're trying to compare performance or find a more convenient tool for certain tasks. The reasoning behind this approach is understandable, though it might seem unusual. You mention using Photoshop frequently and GIMP less often, which highlights your preference for the latter. The need to switch between platforms adds complexity, especially when dealing with large files or specific workflows.
Photopea seems limited for basic tasks compared to Photoshop. While the interface and shortcuts resemble Photoshop, its functionality doesn't match expectations for simple editing. Many prefer Photopea over GIMP due to its streamlined approach, and some switch to Krita for similar shortcut setups. If you're seeking a photo editor, GIMP is generally the top choice.
Wow, soo many good responses! Really glad to hear the Bluetooth is working out of the box now. Photoshop is the only way i am going to go, i have tons of actions and batch processes for photoshop, but none of them are heavy. I have been building a game for 3+ years and i have designed the entire UI system based on the .psd format, additionally artists send me their work in .psd. Swapping is not an option. From what i gather, there are now solutions to all my concerns, what i was hoping for EndeavourOS definitely seems interesting, i haver never actually used Arch so it might be time to try something new. @igormp nice setup! The best high performance, performance per watt system i was able to build two years ago.
Sometimes PS alternatives can read and save to .psd, though problems may arise. Ideally stick to PS for editing but use other tools for quick checks. Common issues include: Spoiler On the left is Krita, on the right Clip Studio Paint. In this scenario CSP displays the original image accurately, while Krita distorts it significantly. Gimp appears similar to Krita, and the second image is shown correctly by all mentioned programs. The first image comes from a single folder, the second from another, each created by different people; the first folder might not render well in Krita or Gimp due to its CSP origin, whereas the second was originally saved as a .psd file.
